This dragon design is exclusive to INSIDE and is based on a vintage Tibetan rug which our owner bought over 30 years ago. We are getting a couple more pieces in the original green but thought it would be interesting to try something different. In the end, we selected a gorgeous red, a sophisticated cream and a morning sky blue.
Beautiful natural tones
The process begins with a careful selection of raw wool, which is spun into yarn and then dyed to the right specifications at the workshop.
‘Balling’ is done by hand, to make the yarn 3 ply, and prevent entanglement when the weavers are at work.
Each design is painstakingly drawn onto a sheet, with the colours added in water colour, to create a template for the weaver to follow. The rugs are hand-knotted in the traditional Tibetan style. The ‘cross weave’ method takes a lot longer but creates a much more durable (and easier to repair) product than uncrossed or machine-tufted rugs. Tibetan cross-weave rugs can last for generations if properly cared for. View reel here
Worker welfare is a top priority for our suppliers.
As part of the finishing process, a flame is passed gently over the back of the rug to remove any stray fibres and seal the knots.
The top of the rug is skilfully trimmed by hand, to flatten the pile and distinguish the lines in the design more clearly.
And finally, a bath in the pristine waters of the high Himalayas! An occasional wash in water, with or without a mild, non-chemical detergent, is perfectly safe for your rugs, and is really one of the best ways to keep them clean.
We only have a limited selection. Hope to have them in the shops and online very soon, but please let us know if you would like to reserve one.
Everything works, but to celebrate the recent arrival of new table linen from India, this year we chose an exuberant Floral tablecloth in mint, with deep pink flowers, teamed with another tablecloth as a runner. As a result, we have ended up with a very traditional red and green theme.
2. Create your centrepiece
If you want a lasting visual impact, create a dramatic centrepiece which will also add different visual levels. We have used our handmade wooden cake stand (at 50% off) as a base, and arranged pine cones, flowers, cute Christmas trees, fairy lights and crackers for a festive touch.

3. Include floral arrangements
As mentioned above, don’t underestimate the power of incorporating floral arrangements. Here, we used our bundle of gorgeous fake Christmas flowers which add to the festivity, but real flowers, ivy, pine branches etc would be stunning too. They are a crucial step in your Christmas table setting! It will effortlessly make your table look richer and more beautiful. In fact… consider decorating your centerpiece with flower arrangements all year long!
4. Use stunning Sthal tableware with holly napkin rings

So, this week, we take a quick look at the pros and cons of real or fake, particularly for city dwellers.
Appearance
The artificial flower industry has come a long way over the past couple of decades. Sometimes, fake still looks very fake…
But it’s now sometimes very hard to tell the difference. If you’ve found yourself surreptitiously attempting to tear a leaf or sniff a flower in a restaurant or bar (or a friend’s house 😔) to check, you’ll know what we mean.
We put Nhi and Malu to a quick test. Yes, sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference, and this completely destroys our main objection to fake flowers: it’s when they look it.
Real or fake?
Environmental impact
Now, obviously in our dreams we’d love to have a ‘cut flower garden’ – common to the grander country houses of England, for example, but not realistic if you live in a flat in Hong Kong or Singapore.
In fact, for most of us – and sorry to be depressing - the ‘fresh’ flower alternative has got the same sort of environmental credentials as a battery farm chicken or a cheap plastic toy. Raised in hot houses or under artificial light, using large amounts of fertiliser to force the blooms, and then flown, chilled, long distances by air. And don’t kid yourself. Just because it’s ‘natural’, stuffing the rotting remains of real flowers into a bin liner and sending it off to landfill is not good for the environment either.
So, it’s not obviously the ‘green’ choice, especially when you consider that artificial flowers can last for years.
Expense
Unless you’re growing your own - and even then, there is a cost involved – there’s no question that investing in some very good quality artificial flowers is the economic choice, leaving you more money to blow out on fresh flowers for a very special occasion - or perhaps investing in some beautiful vases from INSIDE.
Practicality
They don’t die. They don’t need their water changed. Guilt-free flowers to suit the season – YES we can have a winter look at home when it’s 32 degrees outside. And no insects!
TOP TIPS for artificial flowers
- Buy individual flowers, rather than pre-prepared bunches
- Change the arrangement occasionally, to give your flowers a fresh new look
- Pay up for better quality. In the world of artificial flowers, cheap looks unrealistic. The best flowers can be made of silk.
- Treat them like real flowers – cut the stems to the right length, remove unwanted foliage
- There’s no reason not to mix fresh with fake. Confuse the eye! Guess what’s real in this picture:
- With wire in the stems, you can bend the flowers to get a more natural shape for your bouquet.
- Real flowers don’t last long enough to get dusty, so dusty flowers are a real give away. Rinse the dust off!

We’re offering some irresistible prices of at least 30% off. Limited quantities only in most of them, so don’t leave it too late.
Cake stands
When we’re lucky enough to have a cake at the INSIDE office/warehouse/showroom in Wong Chuk Hang, we have to confess to the less-than-elegant and rather lazy habit of cutting it and then clumsily levering it straight out of the box, usually onto a napkin. 😱 You’d probably excuse us if you saw the washing-up facilities in this old industrial building, but that’s the only excuse we have. Let’s face it, cake stands make an occasion out of cake - or biscuits or mince pies or fruit tarts - and for an extra special and photogenic touch, simply add some berries or flowers around the edge. Preparation time: 2-3 minutes. Guest approval rating: Extremely high.
Our wooden or marble cake stands come with a glass cloche for keeping your cake fresh. If there’s any left, of course, because who is going to be able to resist something that’s served so beautifully? Now on sale at 30-50% off.
Fluted glass cloche with wooden stand
By the way we’d love you to come and browse or shop at the showroom, just be sure to bring something to read in the very slow old industrial lift!

Colour is always a difficult decision to make. Fashions change from year to year and people’s tastes are very different. Over time one begins to get an idea of trends and which colours buck them. Charcoal seems to be a constant popular colour throughout the years for a more neutral tone while Teal holds its strength as a splash of colour.
What is the significance of the beetle logo?
I was brought up in the Irish country side so I have always had an interest in nature. Ladybirds, bugs and beetles have always been a fascination as they look so solid and stable, but have the ability to fold back their cases and fly in an instant. A business should also have these qualities.
And finally – tell us about the geese!
Being a country boy, I like animals around. A dog or four is a must, but they can be quite lazy, especially at night. I have known a number of hounds that find it difficult getting up in the morning. Geese, however, are very different creatures. They are only happy when in a group and one of them will be on duty at all times. The geese are therefore our number one line of security.
We were fortunate enough to spend last weekend at a lovely hotel at Yen Tu in Northern Vietnam. The sacred Yen Tu mountain is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Vietnam.
This is what the hotel has to say about itself:
“Inspired by Yen Tu’s ancient architecture and designed with meticulous attention to detail, Legacy Yen Tu is a strong, yet humble testament to Vietnam’s past. The property features handcrafted materials and ancient construction methods by nearby villagers living in the surroundings for generations, creating a harmonious and pure atmosphere right from within the local community”.
We planned a weekend of meditation (FAIL), yoga classes (FAIL), healthy eating (sort of TICK, but slightly led astray by some complimentary canapes) and abstinence from alcohol (FAIL, thanks to some amazing cocktails).
Hiking in the mountains was a TICK, here’s me wondering just how many more bloody (excuse my language) steps were needed to get to the summit.
We did not plan on succumbing to the activity suggested by several online reviews:
“Every corner offers a perfect scene for Instagram!”
Major FAIL. As you can see. It really was irresistibly photogenic, both inside and out.
We’re not sure if the12th century King-turned monk who founded the original retreat had social media in mind, but spectacular architecture, art and design have gone hand in-hand with religion for centuries, and perhaps he would be delighted by this 21st century interpretation of his Buddhist retreat by the founder of Bangkok and Bali based Bill Bensley, the renowned architect, interior designer and landscape gardener, known for his love of colour and flamboyant maximalism. We certainly were. (For a glimpse into Bensley’s spectacular Bangkok home, see this article in Tatler Asia ).
And we were delighted to see the tiger motif appearing all over the place in this hotel – rugs, cushions, wall decorations, paintings, and very timely for us as we are shortly introducing another tiger rug to our collection and expecting a small new delivery of one of our existing designs. The rugs are hand-woven in the Tibetan style in Nepal, and each rug takes up to four weeks to make. We think they are very special and hope you will love them too.
]]>Block-print has been an INSIDE staple ever since we set up, but I have never seen it being made before. This proved to be one of the highlights of my trip and I would strongly recommend it if you get the chance.
Established block-printers usually have a library of carved wooden (or brass) blocks, with hundreds of different patterns and designs, all of which can be used with different colour schemes, hence the extraordinary variety of block-print available:
Watching artisans delicately press these intricate wooden blocks onto fabrics was a true delight.
The artisan was working on some block-printed palm tree (one of our best-selling motifs) placemats. To start, he printed the border.
Next, he printed the outline of the palm tree. Note that he’s doing it by eye - there’s a lot of skill to this, but it also accounts for the minor variations which are part of the charm of this fabric.
Thirdly, he added colour to the floral part of the palm tree (the inflorescence), by dipping a small matching block into a magenta-toned pigment.
Then, he pressed the dominant colours of the palm tree (here, the leaves and the trunk).
Last but not least, he pressed a piece of cloth on the print, to soak up any excess dye.
With impressive speed and accuracy, he repeated the process… and voila!
I found the patience and precision of these artisans to be quite awe-inspiring. We are proud and grateful to be a part of this unique block-printing tradition, to spread its beauty in Hong Kong and Singapore, and to witness its magic in action.
An abundance of colour and joy
From the bustling streets of Delhi to the vivid colours of Rajasthan, we were immersed in a kaleidoscope of hues. The vibrant markets, filled with textiles and handicrafts, were a true feast for our senses. Every corner was a living canvas!
Stay tuned: a wide range of new arrivals
Our trip to India has been nothing short of magical. We can’t wait to share our wide range of new, contemporary and traditional, but always gorgeous block-printed fabrics with you. Expect brand new bed and table linen, washbags, bathrobes, fashionable sun dresses, and beach bags! Each piece is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship we happily witnessed during our trip.
A glimpse of what is coming soon
Our new collections will breathe life into your home and your wardrobe. Be ready to see an explosion of colour, intricate designs and stories behind every thread.
To conclude, I can’t wait to go back. The behind-the-scenes block-printing process, the kaleidoscope of colours and patterns, and the general atmosphere have left me more inspired than ever. As always, INSIDE will proudly continue to celebrate the spirit, art and tradition of India. Stay tuned for the unveiling of our new arrivals - and let the magic of India envelop you as you embrace the beauty of these extraordinary creations.

When it comes to summer dining, there's nothing quite like enjoying a meal outdoors in the warm sunshine. To make your al-fresco lunches and breakfasts truly memorable, why not create a table setting that embodies the essence of summer? In this blog post, we'll guide you through a simple yet sophisticated plan to transform your table into a summery oasis using white tableware, a blue tablecloth, light rattan accents, elegant linen napkins, clear or blue glassware, and a touch of floral beauty.
1. Use white tableware
Start by embracing the timeless elegance of white tableware. White dishes and serving pieces provide a clean and fresh canvas for your summer meals. The simplicity of white allows the vibrant colours of your food to take centre stage, creating a visually appealing and appetising display.
2. Pair it with a blue tablecloth
To infuse your table setting with a touch of summer charm, opt for a blue tablecloth. Blues are reminiscent of the clear skies of the season. Choose a shade that complements your white tableware and that brings a refreshing pop of colour to your outdoor dining experience. Whether it's a soft pastel blue or a vibrant azure, the choice is yours. Here, we used a unique block-printed table linen. Visit our stores to discover our wide selection!
3. Use light rattan accents
To add a natural and rustic element to your table, incorporate light rattan accents. Rattan placemats bring texture and warmth to the setting. The earthy tones of rattan harmonise beautifully with the white and blue colour scheme, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.
4. Simple and elegant linen napkins
Linen napkins exude an air of sophistication while maintaining a relaxed and casual vibe. Opt for high-quality natural linen napkins that are soft to the touch. Their natural texture will effortlessly elevate your table setting. Wrap them with gorgeous shagreen napkin rings for an added touch of style and sophistication.
5. Add clear or blue glassware
When it comes to glassware, choose either clear or blue options to complement your table setting. Whether you're serving refreshing lemonades or sparkling wines, the glassware will complete the overall aesthetic.
6. Flowers!
To truly embrace the beauty of summer, don't forget to incorporate your favourite floral arrangements. Choose blossoms that match the colour palette of your table setting, such as white lilies, delicate daisies, or dahlia flowers as seen on the image. Arrange them in vases like our gorgeous and eye-catching Sthal vase.
By following these tips, you can easily create a table setting that exudes elegance, simplicity, and the spirit of summer. Whether you're hosting a casual brunch or an intimate dinner, the combination of white tableware, a blue tablecloth, light rattan, linen napkins, glassware, and floral accents will transport you and your guests to a summer paradise. So, gather your loved ones, savour delicious meals, and make lasting memories around a table that captures the essence of the season. Happy summer dining!

The term "suzani" comes from the Persian word "suzan," meaning "needle." Suzani textiles are decorative embroidered cloths from Central Asia, which emerged along the Silk Road connecting China, Turkey, Europe, and the Middle East, originally in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Usually hand-stitched by young girls to form part of their dowry, suzani was used as decorative hangings, bedding, and prayer and seating mats. Beyond their practical uses, these vibrant pieces held symbolic significance. Each stitch represented spiritual power, with four stitch types (basma, chain, tambour, and kanda-khayol) forming motifs believed to offer protection, strength, fertility and longevity. Contemporary suzani embroidery now incorporates additional stitches such as satin, chain, and buttonhole stitching. Due to their charm and beauty, old suzani textiles can sell for thousands of dollars.
Suzani is still produced today. There are (inevitably) machine-produced versions, but it is still possible to buy suzani made the traditional way and here at INSIDE, we are proud to present a collection of stunning, hand-embroidered pieces by Saamro. (We hasten to add that these are not made by young girls, but skilled craftsmen and women).
Behind-the-scenes: the creation process
The process begins with the selection of fabric onto which the design is drawn or transferred. Using a variety of stitches, the artisan meticulously sews intricate patterns and motifs onto the fabric. Carefully executed, with each thread looped or woven by hand, the stitches result in a raised texture and a stunning visual effect.
The embroidery process requires great attention to detail and precision. Thread colours are carefully selected to create vibrant and harmonious compositions. The artisan may also incorporate additional decorative elements such as gold-toned sequins and metallic gold strings, as seen in the video, or mirrors and beads, to enhance the overall aesthetic.
The design above is available for purchase here and in stores.

Home decor in 2023 is all about warm earthy tones, such as yellow and green accents (see first image below*). They bring warmth and personality while adding a natural-looking touch. By using different fabrics like velvet and linen, you can easily create a stylish and inspiring look that captures the spirit of spring. These colours also work well in table settings (see second image below).

Re-styling a space can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to a 'lad pad' - a space that is typically associated with a more stark and masculine aesthetic. However, our recent challenge of revamping a lad pad resulted in stunning and impressive outcomes that left our client in awe.
Our client had recently moved into this spacious unfurnished apartment, and although he had acquired most of the main pieces of furniture, he wanted to inject a touch of sophistication, while maintaining a cool, cozy and calm atmosphere. Our team worked with him to bring this vision to life by incorporating a captivating array of blue hues throughout the space.
Before
After
The main feature of his living room was a large sofa. We started by removing the chunky back cushions. This simple device works well on a low-backed sofa, and makes sure that you don’t reduce the depth of the sofa when you add cushions of your own. We then replaced them with a selection of cushions and throws from INSIDE in shades of blue, green and black, to complement the sofa and the blinds. We stuck to plain velvet and gently striped woven fabrics, apart from one green floral pattern and the whimsical spot cushion that he already owned. A couple of floor cushions provide extra seating. We repositioned some of the furniture in the room, advised him on where to hang paintings, and debated whether or not to replace the large screen TV with a projector!
Our client enjoys cooking and having friends over for meals, but he felt the black dining table was too stark. With a budget to stick to, we suggested he retain his existing glassware and wooden plates, and to pull it together, we helped him choose some Vietnamese ceramics, added our colourful seagrass placemats, and a couple of chic Sthal serving dishes in thunder colour. With our client’s stunning painting as a back drop, the dining area was quickly transformed into a space which is masculine, sophisticated and fun. We will be working again with him on his rooftop before the summer.
Before
After
Overall, this project was a great success. The end result was a very happy client, with a space that was both stylish and comfortable, and perfectly suited to his taste and budget. We're thrilled to have been a part of this project, and we look forward to tackling more challenges like this in the future!
If you're feeling inspired to breathe new life into your own space, we're here to help. Get in touch with us today at mary@inside.com.hk for all your re-styling needs.

2. Traditional dishes
Because Chinese New Year is a time for feasting, make sure you have plenty of tasty food on hand. Set the table with traditional dishes such as dumplings, noodles, and fish, and don't forget the oranges, which are thought to have healing properties! Our handcrafted box made of wood and brass, displayed below and available here, is perfect to store these.
3. Flowers!
Flowers are an important part of Chinese New Year celebrations, and certain types are thought to bring good luck. Chrysanthemums, peonies, and plum blossoms are all popular choices.
With these ideas in mind, you'll be well on your way to decorating your home for Chinese New Year 2023. Embrace the year of the Rabbit!
At INSIDE, we like to keep our Christmas (or any party) tables simple, sustainable and low-key, albeit with a touch of glamour.
We have shared some of our ideas below.
1. Table linen
It goes without saying that this is the time to bring out your best crockery and glassware - if you are lucky enough to have such a thing - but even if you don’t, a lovely table cloth can transform the every day into an occasion. Like all good wardrobe staples, table cloths can be dressed up or dressed down, but they are a great starting point for any special event.
Most table linens will work, but we think our block-printed table cloths* add immediate colour and excitement.
As green and red are the traditional Christmas colours, we have used a green block-printed cloth* and a red Chicoracao recycled cotton table cloth, paired with a Saamro table runner. That being said, the possibilities are endless.
*available in stores
2. Candles and decoration
What’s a party without candles and decoration?
As seen above, we have used our large hurricane candle holder, in which we have added acorns and pine cones for that special holiday cheer, on a base of sand.
Sand is your best friend when it comes to making table decorations: it's free, it’s completely flame-proof and it will hold your candle and other decorations in place, but be careful with moss, pine cones etc nonetheless. We have first-hand experience of seeing these go up in flames – perhaps not the drama and excitement your party needs.
Apart from hurricane lamps, there are plenty of other ways to present your candles in an eye-catching way. Here we have used a cake stand to add some height and a beautiful ceramic dish from our Sthal range. A wooden salad bowl can also do the trick, or a vintage red lacquer bowl, pictured below.
Tip: If you simply want to add candles* directly onto the table, we recommend using coasters to protect the table cloth.
*Christmas tree candles available online soon - stay tuned!
3. Napkin
Even the humblest of napkins can add to the festive look.
We have a wide variety of block print or embroidered napkins, and several types of napkin ring, but even a simple green velvet ribbon (as seen above) on a plain linen napkin makes for a warmer Christmas feel.
A small gift (we’ve used a bar of soap) can be used as a place card (just add a gift tag), and we’ve echoed the green velvet. Add sprigs of pine, rosemary or flowers on top of the gift or tucked into the napkin ribbon for a more festive look.
Whichever plant(s), flower arrangement(s), ribbon(s) you choose...you can scatter pine cones onto the table or add them to the place setting - it instantly makes it look more inviting and christmassy.
]]>
3. Saamro combination
We have focused on our stunning saamro cushions which portray plenty of bright colours and delicate patterns. To make it more winter-y, we have added our extra soft petrol egg throw and our intricate Burel throws which help add comfort and variety to the eye.
3. Formal wrap style
The timeless throw portrayed here is made of 100% pure wool and has been delicately handwoven in Portugal.
2. Stylish & Easy
A throw is not just a design accessory, and on a cold, winter evening, this cosy blanket is just an arm’s reach away. It’s more casual, yet (when it’s not keeping us warm) it still has the refined aesthetic of the ‘tidy and polished’ look, as seen above. Hanging it on the arm of the couch is a great way to put the throw’s tassels, pattern and detail on display.
In this image, we have used our exceptionally soft Chicoracao recycled cotton throw, in a yellow finish - but it is also available in black, blue, red, orange, green, and beige!
3. Perfectly imperfect
‘Perfectly imperfect’ is the challenging one, and we have found it takes a bit of practice to get it right. One technique is to pinch the throw at its centre, then drag it over one of the back corners of the sofa. Or, as we have done in this picture, we have made a few folds in our bi-colour Chicoracao throw, to show both the front and the back, draped it over the sofa at a slight angle, tucked it into the sofa cushions to hold it in place. If your sofa is not against a wall, you will need to think about how it looks from the back as well, but the decorative tassels on this throw make that an easier task.

Back
With cushions
4. Bedridden
Throws are an essential part of bed styling - whether folded or casually tossed over your duvet or quilt. They instantly bring character, warmth and texture. It’s all about mix-and-matching and layering for more comfort and style. In this picture, we have combined a navy blue velvet throw with a beautiful block print quilt, available in our stores.
5. In a basket
In a rush? This may be your best option - just use a decorative basket next to your sofa or bed, and simply toss the throw inside. Make sure to pull one of the throw’s corners so that it hangs over the edge, for an effortless, elegant touch!
Spoilt for choice: block print warehouse in Jaipur
The adrenalin was not confined to the supplier visits. A quick warning to anyone planning to travel to India – Uber is incredibly unreliable. One Jaipur Uber driver turned up, his battered and dirty vehicle covered in the dents and scrapes of the modern day urban road warrior, but when I quietly tried to fasten my seat belt in the back, he swivelled round and sternly waved a finger at me. “No,
madam!” He needn’t have bothered – the seat belt didn’t work anyway. If I was hoping for a better Uber experience in Delhi, I was only to be disappointed. One driver pulled over and insisted we had reached our destination, and when I got out of the car to take a photo to show Uber that we were
not even close, he drove off, leaving me stranded.
We’ll be telling you more about Rasa Jaipur in a future post, but this is a fabulous brand, with an amazing story. I couldn’t resist buying the ‘embroidered beads’ cushion below, and showed it to another supplier, who was curious (and suspicious) about what was in my shopping bag. He refused to believe it was block print, as well he might, because this is block print with a difference.
Rasa Jaipur is of the few suppliers with the technique to block print light colours on dark fabrics, and have added the detail of hand embroidery on top. Back at home, I have teamed it up with a Chicoracao red/orange throw and red Sidewalk cushion and a velvet Citta cushion in Cognac. Orange! We’re loving it!
It was a delight to meet the lovely Vaishali Singhal of Saamro, and her family. Saamro is a new brand for us, and we hope they will be a long-term partner for Inside. Vaishali’s beautiful hand-embroidered cushions and runners are a contemporary interpretation of traditional techniques, and we think they make a stunning addition to a sofa or bed in their own right, or provide a colourful complement to our other collections. Obviously, I couldn’t resist a couple of Saamro cushions either, and here is one of them, paired with a Rasa Jaipur cushion which I already had. Saamro’s products are hand-made at the Udaipur factory which Vaishali shares with her husband’s ayurvedic food
business, and we will be visiting them there in the Spring.
We haven’t forgotten that Christmas is coming up. We have always loved Kashmiri hand-painted papier mache baubles. These are durable and collectible, and this year we have selected a more traditional look. Our supplier, Mr M, having heard about my troubles with Uber, kindly offered me a
lift back to my hotel. We had a lively discussion about Indian and global politics all the way.
Ah,India! So good to be back again.
Autumn decor ideas and design trends tend to focus on creating a warm, cozy home. The great thing is that these trends are timeless, and they can be used for various seasons, even years! Here are the top fall trends for 2022, so you can start creating the ideal space for you and your loved ones.
]]>Here are the top fall trends for 2022, so you can start creating the ideal space for you and your loved ones.
As the season changes, a palette of charming, rich hues will help create a new, relaxing atmosphere. Take ruby red, bright orange, sunny yellow or sage green for example. The warm colours can be implemented in many ways: either as painted on a wall, or by layering cushions and throws, or simply by using a hand knotted rug like the one below:
Natural finishes have been a huge focus this year - otherwise known as the 'Organic Modern Trend'. In fact, it was also part of this summer's trends. For Autumn, organic materials will instantly bring warmth and coziness while creating a refreshing space. Raw, earthy elements really go a long way in any interior space - like this teakwood cabinet, as seen below:
Create a calming home with things such as bedding or layering (this can also be done on your bench or sofa!). To begin with, a kaftan is originally defined as "a long coat-like garment, usually worn with a belt and made of rich fabric, worn in the Middle East." Today, the way a kaftan is styled and used has drastically expanded. Here are tips and tricks to successfully wear a kaftan dress.

1. Choose the right type for you
There are plenty of options to choose from when wearing a kaftan.
Firstly, you can go with the long kaftans, the most known and easiest to style. For this style, the sleeve lengths may vary but the length of the dress will always meet your ankles. Traditional caftans were designed to cover your entire body.
Secondly, the short kaftans: some modern fashion designers have altered them to show off your legs. You can wear these with a nice pair of heels for your next cocktail party.
Thirdly, kaftans with a V-neck (as seen above): they are used for warm, casual settings like a day by the pool or a family barbecue.
2. Mix and match with different bottoms
We love kaftans' versatility: you can choose to complete the look by adding leggings to wear them at work, or add a pair of shorts for a new style for example. You can even pair them with jeans!
3. Wear it at the beach
The most popular way to wear a kaftan dress is to wear it at the beach. Made from an extra-breathable, light fabric, it truly is the perfect add-on to your summer salty days. It takes your whole beachwear to another level! Pair it up with some stylish summer sandals and you're ready to go!
Want to add a Portuguese touch to your home but don't know where to start?
Artisans still maintain the long tradition of Portugal's handicrafts. Typically, the Portuguese style is defined by its richness and variety in colours and materials. Its unique traditional art of handicrafts always leaves a lasting impression.
Here are 3 things you can easily include in your interior for a Portuguese touch:
1. Handmade wool pieces
Wool is part of Portuguese history and heritage - known as the typical fabric supported by the creativity of the best Portuguese designers.
For example, since 1947, Burel Factory continues to produce using the same machines and traditional equipment, from the time the industry was still made by hand. The brand ensures the production of unique, different and high quality fabrics while preserving the past, reinterpreting it and making it into a story of the future.
2. Colours
Chicoracao is also known for its beautiful wool and cotton craft (as seen in the picture at the top of the blog, featuring a mustard yellow wool throw); restoring wool looms from the 1960s and 1970s, preserving the traditions while safeguarding the environment.
They also use recycled cotton for their beautiful table cloths, place mats and cushion covers, and will extend this to their entire cotton range as and when supply of raw material allows. We love the soft, textured woven fabrics, but what really caught our eye was the variety of colours, easily matching any home or style, and providing an opportunity to add something different. Have a look at their wide range of recycled cotton cushion covers here.
3. Ceramics
Portugal is also famed for its high-quality and rich heritage in ceramics, delicately finished with enticing colours and patterns. Sthal ceramics are crafted in Portugal and are inspired by their crafts - with a modern Scandinavian twist.
This brand is proving very popular with our customers, and mixes beautifully with our selection of Portuguese, Indian and Vietnamese tablecloths and runners.
A summer table scape isn't successful without bright colours involved. This sets a fun and cheerful tone while adding a refined and beautiful touch to the table.

2. Add coloured glassware
Coloured glassware will inevitably suit the summer mood while brightening up your table scape. If not now, when?
3. Elevate the setting with marble pieces
Adding marble is always a good idea. It is known as the most luxe finish you can add to your table (and your home!). It will keep the table scape simple, yet sophisticated and functional.

2. Don't be afraid to add statement objects!
Add attitude and expression with statement objects. Go the extra mile with daring shapes or vibrant colours! The possibilities are endless. Just remember: quality over quantity.
Tip: opt for golden tones which remind the shimmering summer sunsets!
3. Think of lighting as the jewellery of your interior
Lighting affects our mood and significantly impacts the ambience of an interior.
A new lamp may completely alter how a room will make you feel. Here's an example of a natural terracotta lamp that leaves a lasting yet organic impression.
4. Sustainability
These days, the focus is on making the right and thoughtful choices for your interior and the planet by using recycled or up-cycled furniture. Or simply, pieces that are made with eco-friendly materials: like this eco-mix made decorative lantern. This resonates well with our values here at INSIDE.

Can you tell us a bit about your brand Zest of Asia, and what inspired you to create it?
Everything started in 2008 when I first arrived in Hong Kong, with a linen tablecloth. I was curious to see what an embroidered typical local tassel would look like on it. Then, it all started from there... I quickly saw the impact and the positive feedback it drew.
Not long after, I found a tea towel that I also embroidered. This tea towel quickly became the first and flagship product of my collection. I started designing more in red, blue, then later on, in grey.
Combining my travels in Asia with the passion I have for interior decoration, this significantly helped me kickstart my brand.
Where did the brand first appear?
For a while, I was showcasing my products at Conrad fairs. These really helped raise awareness on my brand and my creations. Then, I started doing private sales, and started developing in boutiques like Inside!
Are all your creations made locally?
Yes! The tea towels, table linens and napkins are all proudly made in Hong Kong.
Is Zest of Asia only known in Hong Kong?
Today, I'm happy to say that Zest of Asia is expanding to Japan and Malaysia!
What's your favourite part of this city?
Typically, I'm more of a nature/ sea-side person. The south of the island is truly my breath of oxygen. That being said, I adore wandering around typical areas like Wan Chai, Sham Shui Po, where I constantly get inspired and meet wonderful people. Hong Kong truly is a special place, and if you're passionate about interior design, it's incredibly inspirational.
Any new products we should keep an eye out for?
I've been working on a new collection of tea towels made in France (more specifically in the Basque Coast), to showcase the unique, high-quality French touch while still incorporating the most typical elements of Hong Kong. I've also been working on more table linen, also coming from Europe. Stay tuned!

Mary, what are the main tips to decorate a bathroom?
1. Choose your colour scheme
To begin with, choose a colour scheme for your bathroom. Typically, choose no more than 3 colours. This colour scheme will be a good base to select objects and accessories that best fit your interior.
The first objects that can give a gorgeous aesthetic while coordinating your chosen colour scheme are towels. They don't all have to match: the patterns and hues can be different. For example, if your colour scheme is blue, you can have a dark blue-striped towel on your towel holder, with a plain light blue towel underneath it.
Then, use some colour-coordinated wash bags to enhance the chosen colour and general mood.
2. Give attention to the little details
Never underestimate the use of glass containers! A bathroom will instantly look more appealing with beautiful storage containers, in which you can put your cotton pads for example.
Enhance the decorative aspect of your bathroom (and the fragrance) with a candle and a matchbox.
Try to keep your tissues in a tissue box and use a colour-coordinated soap holder!
Last but not least, why not add a nice hook for your colour-coordinated dressing gown?
3. Easily decorate with curtains, paintings and rugs
Bathrooms tend to be the most unloved rooms, especially in Hong Kong.
People worry the humidity of a bathroom will spoil paintings or pictures on the wall. In fact, I've had this set of prints from London for 20-30 years already without any damage! Prints can also give an amusing touch to the bathroom.
People tend to dislike using curtains in the bathroom for the same reason. Most bathrooms have very small windows - the advantage is that you can take an expensive fabric and use it as a window cover affordably.
This fabric has been in the bathroom for 10 years without any special treatment and has never had mould. The green represents my favourite colour and the setting outside.
An easy way to soften up a bathroom floor is to use a rug: another thing that people will tend to shy away from. This Weavergreen rug that I use in the bathroom is made from recyclable bottles: they are extremely durable and versatile, as you can use them anywhere indoors or outdoors. They are very easy to wash!
